University of Newcastle GPA Scale
The University of Newcastle uses a 7-point GPA scale with only five letter grades. GPA = Σ(unit value × grade) ÷ Σ(unit values), rounded to 1 decimal place (≤ x.49 rounds down; ≥ x.50 rounds up). Standard undergraduate course = 10 unit values. Full-time semester typically = 40 unit values (4 × 10-unit courses).
| Grade | GPA Points | Description | Mark Range | GPA contribution (10 UV) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HD | 7 | High Distinction | 85–100% | 70 |
| D | 6 | Distinction | 75–84% | 60 |
| C | 5 | Credit | 65–74% | 50 |
| P | 4 | Pass | 50–64% | 40 |
| FF | 0 | Fail | 0–49% | 0 |
No marginal fail grade - UON goes directly from P (4) to FF (0). There is no grade 3, D+, or conceded pass band.
UP (Ungraded Pass) = 4 GPA points, but usually excluded from GPA. It is only included when it advantages the student (GPA < 4.0), or when more than 50% of grades are UPs.
Grades excluded from GPA: W (Withdrawn - does not appear on official transcripts), NA (Not Applicable), UP (usually).
Special codes: I (Incomplete) - automatically converts to FF after 90 days if outstanding work is not submitted. IP (Incomplete Placement) - converts to FF after 180 days.
Honours thresholds: Class I: GPA ≥ 6.0 in upper-level courses + research component ≥ 85%. Class II Division 1: GPA ≥ 5.5 or 6.0 (varies by research component). Class II Division 2: GPA ≥ 5.5 with research component ≥ 65%.
