How the UniMelb WAM Calculator Works
The University of Melbourne uses WAM (Weighted Average Mark) as its official academic measure, calculated to 3 decimal places. UniMelb uses unique grade names instead of the HD/D/C/P/F scale used at most Australian universities.
Standard subject = 12.5 credit points; full-time semester = 50 cp (4 subjects).
| Grade | Description | Mark Range | Equivalent at most Aus unis |
|---|---|---|---|
| H1 | First Class | 80–100% | HD (though HD usually starts at 85%) |
| H2A | Second Class Upper | 75–79% | Distinction |
| H2B | Second Class Lower | 70–74% | Distinction |
| H3 | Third Class | 65–69% | Credit |
| P | Pass | 50–64% | Pass |
| N | Fail | 0–49% | Fail |
WAM formula: WAM = Σ(mark × credit points) ÷ Σ(credit points), to 3 decimal places.
Official example: Two 12.5-cp subjects (76%, 67%) and one 37.5-cp subject (81%): WAM = (76×12.5 + 67×12.5 + 81×37.5) ÷ (12.5+12.5+37.5) = 4825 ÷ 62.5 = 77.200.
Fail (N) marks included in WAM. Pass/fail subjects (SPS, NGP, WH, CNT without mark) excluded.
Honours thresholds: H3 (WAM ≥ 65) typical minimum for Honours entry; H1 (WAM ≥ 80) for Doctor of Medicine and competitive graduate programs; H2A (WAM ≥ 75) for most competitive postgraduate applications.
